How tooth decay actually starts
Decay is caused by acid produced when the bacteria in plaque feed on sugars. Each exposure softens the enamel slightly; saliva then repairs it. Problems arise when the acid attacks are too frequent for the repair to keep up — which is why how often you eat and drink matters more than how much.
Caught at the white-spot stage, this damage can be remineralised. Once a cavity forms through the enamel, a filling becomes necessary. Prevention is about staying on the right side of that line.
